Jahangir Ratanji Dadabhai Tata or JRD Tata was India's leading industrialist. His name is on top of the industrialists who laid the industrial foundation of modern India. He played an important role in the development of steel, engineering, hotel, aircraft, and other industries in India. JRD Tata launched the country's first commercial airline 'Tata Airlines', which later became 'Air India' in 1946. JRD Tata is also known as the father of the civil aviation of India for this contribution. Considering his incomparable contribution to the development of the country, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Vibhushan in 1955 and the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in 1992.

He transformed the Tata group into one of the leading industrial houses of the country with his skilled leadership and initiated several schemes for the welfare of employees which were later adopted by the Government of India as well. He introduced schemes such as eight-hour workdays, free medical aid, Employees' Provident Fund Scheme, and Workers Accident Compensation Scheme in India for the first time in Tata group companies. In this way, JRD Tata launched the first corporate governance and social development schemes in the Indian corporate sector. JRD Tata was the first person to get a pilot license in India.

J. R. D. Tata was born on July 29, 1904, in Paris. He was the second child of his father Ratanji Dadabhai Tata and mother Suzanne Briere. His father Ratanji was a cousin of the country's leading industrialist Jamsetji Tata. His mother was French, so he spent most of his childhood in France, and French became his first language. He received his early education from the Cathedral and John Connon School Mumbai and then went to Cambridge University to study engineering. He also received one year of compulsory military training in the French Army and wanted to continue working in the army but his father had something else so he had to leave the army.

He started work at Tata & Sons in 1925 as an unpaid trainee. With his hard work, vision, and dedication, he became the chairman of Tata & India's largest industrial conglomerate in 1938. He started the group's leadership with 14 industries and by the time he stepped down as chairman on 26 July 1988, the Tata group had become a large group of 95 enterprises. He directed Tata group companies in the fields of steel, engineering, energy, chemicals, and hospitality for many decades. Along with success in the business sector, he is known for high moral standards and for implementing policies related to the welfare and social security of employees. Many of these programs were later implemented by the Government of India as law.

He was a trustee of the 'Sir Dorabji Tata Trust' for over 50 years and established several institutions of national importance under his guidance. Prominent among these are Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Tata Institute of Basic Research (TIFR), Tata Memorial Center (Asia's first cancer hospital), and National Center for the Performing Arts.

Under his leadership Tata Motors was established in 1945 and in 1948, he launched 'Air India International' as India's first international airline. In 1953, the Government of India appointed him as the Chairman of Air India and the Director of the Board of Indian Airlines. He remained in this post for the next 25 years.

He implemented several beneficial policies for the benefit of the employees of the Tata group. He initiated the 'Employee Liaison with Company Management' program for involvement and knowledge of workers in the affairs of the company. Awards and honors


In view of his contribution to the development of society and the country, he was honored with several national and international awards. The Indian Air Force launched the JRD Tata was awarded the honorary rank of Group Captain and later promoted to the rank of Air Commodore and then Air Vice Marshal on 1 April 1974. He has been awarded several awards for his outstanding contribution to the field of aviation - Tony Janus Award (1979), Gold Air Medal (1985) by Federation Aeronautic Internationale, Edward Warner Award (1986), and Daniel Guggenheim Award by International Civil Aviation Organization based in Canada. (1988). The Government of India honored him with the Padma Vibhushan in 1955 and the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1992.


How did J.R.D. Tata died?



J. R. D. Tata died on 29 November 1993 in Geneva (Switzerland) due to kidney infection. On his death, the Indian Parliament adjourned its proceedings in his honor. He was posthumously buried in his birthplace, Paris.
