Guru Nanak Dev Ji Biography:. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founder of Sikhism and the first Guru of the Sikhs. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Prakash Parva. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in a village called Talwandi situated on the banks of the Ravi river in Pakistan (Punjab). He was born in 1469 on the day of Kartik Purnima. This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Sikhism. He was born to father Kalyan or Mehta Kalu Ji and mother Trupti Devi. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in a Hindu family.

It is believed in Sikhism that since childhood, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was rich in special powers. He got to learn a lot from his sister Nanaki. At the age of 16, he got married to Sulkhani. Sulkhani was a resident of Lakhawki in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab (India). His two sons were Srichand and Lakhmi Chand. After the birth of these two children, Guru Nanak Dev Ji went out on pilgrimage. He made long journeys. Mardana, Lahna, Bala, and Ramdas also accompanied him on this journey. By 1521 he traveled. During this journey, he preached to everyone and made them aware of social evils. He visited many places in India, Afghanistan, and Arabia.

Guru Nanak lived in many places during his travels. He opposed social malpractices. He considered idol worship to be futile and opposed orthodox thinking. He spent the last time of his life in Kartarpur, Pakistan. Kartapur is a sacred religious site for Sikhs. Guru Nanak Dev ji died on 22 September 1539, but he left behind three basic principles of his life namely Japo, Kirat Karo and Vanda Chakho to the followers of Sikhism. In Kartarpur, the divine light of Guru Nanak Dev Ji merged. He succeeded his disciple brother Lahna before his death, who would later be called Guru Angad Dev Ji. He is considered the second Guru of the Sikhs.
