Sukhdev (years 1907–1931) was a famous Indian revolutionary who played a major role in India's struggle for independence. He is one of the greatest Indian freedom fighters who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his country. His full name is Sukhdev Thapar and he was born on 15 May 1907. His ancestral home is in the city of Ludhiana, Naghra Mohalla, Punjab, India. His father's name was Ram Lal. From his childhood days, Sukhdev had witnessed the brutal atrocities that the imperial British government inflicted on India, which compelled him to meet the revolutionaries and vowed to free India from the shackles of British rule.

Sukhdev Thapar was a member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and organized revolutionary groups in Punjab and other regions of North India. A patriotic leader, Sukhdev went to Lahore National College to educate the youth and there he was greatly inspired about the glorious past of India. He along with other famous revolutionaries started the 'Naujawan Bharat Sabha' in Lahore, an organization involved in various activities. They mainly inspired the youth to participate in the freedom struggle and to end communalism.

Sukhdev himself played an active role in many revolutionary activities such as the 'Hunger Strike of Prison' in the year 1929. For his courageous attack in the Lahore Conspiracy Case (18 December 1928), he will always be remembered in the history of the Indian independence movement, as it shook the foundations of the British government. Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh and Shivram Rajguru were companions, who together with Deputy Superintendent of Police J.J. P. Saunders was killed, the reason for killing the Deputy Superintendent of Police by creating such a conspiracy was to avenge the death of senior leader, Lala Lajpat Rai. After the bombing in the Central Assembly of New Delhi (8 April 1929), Sukhdev and his associates were arrested and convicted of the crime and sentenced to death as a verdict.

On 23 March 1931, three brave revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivram Rajguru, were hanged while their bodies were cremated in secret on the banks of the Sutlej River. Sukhdev Thapar was just 24 years old when he became a martyr for his country. However, he will always be remembered for his courage, patriotism and sacrifice of life for India's independence.

Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) Sukhdev Thapar was a devoted leader. He became a member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He also worked to educate the younger generation at the National College, Lahore.

Prison hunger strike Sukhdev actively participated in many revolutionary activities. The hunger strike by Sukhdev in prison in the year 1929 was prominent among them.

Lahore Conspiracy For his remarkable contribution in the case of Lahore Conspiracy of 18 December 1928, he is remembered even today.

A few days before hanging Sukhdev wrote a letter to Gandhi in which he said that "three prisoners of the Lahore conspiracy have been sentenced to death". He also wrote, By convicting them in the country, there will not be as much change as they will get when they are hanged."

In a 300-page judgment on 7 October 1930, the Special Tribunal, hanged Sukhdev and Rajguru for the Saunders murder case on the basis of all the evidence.

Hanging Penalty In the Lahore conspiracy case, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death. The court ordered that the three be hanged on 24 March 1931. The Home Secretary of Punjab changed the date of execution on 17 March 1931 to 23 March 1931.

Criticism of the Special Tribunal The decision was criticized nationwide by the Tribunal, as law and order was being conducted according to the will of the British government. The first execution took place in the evening. Furthermore, the authorities did not even let the family of the accused meet before the execution nor did they hand over the bodies of the three to their relatives to perform their last rituals. Rather, the body was disposed of by cutting it into pieces and burning it with kerosene. The remaining remains were later dumped in the Sutlej River.


Honor 23 March is celebrated across the country as Martyr's Day in honor of the sacrifice of those great heroes.
