Sunil Bharti Mittal is an Indian industrialist, social worker and chairman of India's largest telecom company Airtel. His name is among the few telecom entrepreneurs in the world. Sunil's company Bharti Airtel is one of the largest telephone companies in the world, with a business spread across 19 countries. Airtel provides GSM mobile service as well as internet broadband services and around 200 million customers are using it. Sunil has achieved this success due to his hard work, true dedication and vision.


Sunil was born in 1957 in Ludhiana district of Punjab. His father Satpal Mittal was a politician and was a Member of Parliament twice from Lok Sabha and once from Rajya Sabha. He got his early education from Winburg Allen School in Mussoorie and later Scindia School in Gwalior. In the year 1976, he graduated from Punjab University. Sunil says that as a child he was not particularly interested in studies and wanted to set up his own business.

Recalling his early days, Sunil Bharti Mittal recounts, "I first started the business of making threads for Cycle Parts and Hosiery. The early days were very difficult and I managed to get a lot of work out of difficulty.


Sunil Bharti Mittal's willingness to give up under any circumstances was a result of persistence, hard work and perseverance that his business turned out to be his companion, with little difficulties. But he was not satisfied with that much. When he felt that his business could not fulfill his dreams, he moved from Ludhiana to Mumbai after selling that business and started a new business in Mumbai with his brothers. The company he created for his new business was named "Bharti Overbridge Trading Company."

Mayanagri Mumbai is called the city of dreams, so Sunil Bharti Mittal felt that there is no better place than Mumbai to make his dreams come true. Finally he created a new company in Mumbai called "Bharti Overbridge Trading Company" and through this he started selling and selling Portbal Generetaro from Japan to India.


His lucky opportunity came in 1992, when the government was first starting to license mobile phone services. At the same time Sunil Mittal obtained the license of Cellular Circle from Delhi. In 1995, he founded Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) and launched the Airtel brand. He was honored with numerous awards, including Asian Business of the Year by Fortune Magazine in 2006, Business Leader by Economic Times in 2005, and Asian Business at Ernst & Young Entrepreneur in 2004. He is one of the wealthiest Indians around the world. The Bharti Group also entered into an agreement with US retail giant Walmart in 2006 to start several retail outlets across India.

Private Life


In 1976, at a very young age, Sunil started a business with his two brothers and a friend; Although there was not much struggle in his early life, he worked hard and decided to set his work forward.


His father died in 1992 due to heart disease. But nothing stopped this ambitious telecom mogul from fulfilling his ambitions. Sunil Mittal's wife's name is Nayana and has three children, a daughter Isha Mittal and twin sons, Kavin Mittal and Sharvin Mittal. Sunil Mittal studied at Arya College, Ludhiana.

Awards and honors


    2007: Government of India awarded Padma Bhushan
    He was awarded the "Transforming India Leader" award under the NDTV Business Leader          Award.
    He was also honored with the GSMA President's Award.
    In 2006, Fortune magazine awarded "Asia Businessman of the Year"
