Neerja Bhanot was the hostess of Pan Am Airlines in Mumbai, awarded the Ashok Chakra. Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked on 5 September 1986, became a victim of terrorists' bullets while assisting and protecting passengers. For her bravery, the Government of India honored her with the highest gallantry award of the peace period, the Ashoka Chakra.


Neerja Bhanot / Neerja Bhanot was born in Chandigarh, India, she was the daughter of Rama Bhanot and Harish Bhanot, Harish Bhanot was working in the field of journalism at The Hindustan Times Mumbai. And Neerja did her early education at Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School in her hometown Chandigarh.

Neerja's marriage took place in 1985 and she moved to the Gulf country with her husband, but a few days later the relationship soured due to dowry pressure and Neerja returned to Mumbai only two months after the marriage. But her in-laws were putting some pressure on the dowry, due to which their marriage could not last for a few more days and both of them got divorced. After getting divorced, she applied for a job and in 1985 she joined a job, she worked as an air hostess in the plane, after that her work was going well and the senior there was doing everything well. But in 1986, such an incident happened that even today every human being remembers was standing at the flight airport in Lahore, Pakistan in 1985, when the terrorists hijacked the plane.


Plane Hijack Events


Pan Am-73 from Mumbai to New York was hijacked by four terrorists in Karachi and took all the passengers hostage, three crew members managed to get out of the cockpit of the aircraft immediately. As the most senior aircraft carrier left behind, the responsibility of the passengers was on Neerja and after 18 hours when the terrorists started killing the passengers and started putting explosives in the plane, Neerja managed to open the emergency door of the aircraft and the passengers Provided a safe exit route.

If she wanted to, she could have jumped before herself by opening the door but she did not try to get the passengers out first. In the same effort, Neerja died due to the bombardment of the bullets of a terrorist while firing three children while Neerja was trying to shoot at the children. This heroic self-immolation of Neerja earned her international fame as the Heroine of Hijack. If Nirja wanted to go ahead of all she could save her life but Nirja did nothing as she wanted to save the lives of all her passengers. At the last when Nirja was getting out of that plane, she saw that 3 children have been trapped in that plane, there is no one to take them out so they tried to take out those three children. But at the same time, all those terrorists killed the girl while she was out, and the poor she was killed, the 3 children had somehow survived, but the girl, Nirja, had been killed, a girl was killed today who killed 376 people. Saved.


The honor


After the sacrifice of Neerja Bhanot, the Government of India conferred upon her the highest civilian honor 'Ashoka Chakra', while the Government of Pakistan also gave 'Tamga-e-Insaniyat' to Neerja. Neerja was indeed the greatest adventurer of independent India. In 2004, a postage stamp has also been issued in honor of Neerja Bhanot. Internationally, Neerja's name is famous as 'Heroine of Hijack'. In 2005, the US awarded her 'Justice for Crime Award'.

Memory Remains


A crossroads have been christened in Ghatkopar area of ​​Mumbai in Neerja's Samriti, which was inaugurated by Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan in the 90s. Apart from this, an organization 'Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Nyas' has also been established in her memory, which commemorates his valor and rewards women for indomitable courage and valor. This institution, established by their families, gives two awards every year, one of which is given to the aircraft workers globally and the other is for women in India to raise their voice and struggle against various kinds of injustice and atrocities. Each award amounts to Rs 1,50,000 and is accompanied by a trophy and a memento to the awardee. Bhanwari Bai, a Dalit woman from Rajasthan, who was famous for her voice against female atrocities, was also given this award.


Movie

To remember this adventure of Neerja and her sacrifice, the film production on her was announced in the year 2010 but due to some reasons this work was postponed. In April 2015, it was reported that shooting of this film has started under the direction of Ram Madhwani. Actor Sonam Kapoor played Neerja in this film. The film is released on 19 February 2016. The producer of this film is Atul Kashbekar.
