Padma Vibhushan Arjan Singh, Marshal of the Indian Air Force was the only officer promoted to the five-star level. He died on 16 September 2017 at the age of 98. He held the post of Chief in the Indian Air Force. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for successfully handling the command of the Air Force during the Indo-Pak war of 1975 and was promoted to the post of Air Chief Marshal in 1949. After his retirement from the Air Force, he also served as a diplomat, politician and consultant to the Government of India. He held the post of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. In 2002, he was appointed as the Marshal of the Indian Air Force. This was the first time that an officer of the Indian Air Force had reached the five-star level.

Marshal Arjan Singh was the Chief of the Air Force when the war between India and Pakistan started in 1965. He was born on 15 April 1919 in Lailpur, Pakistan. He was selected for the Empire Pilot Trainig Course at RAF in 1938. Later, when he was assigned, he served the Northwest Frontier Province as a member of No. 1 IAF Squadron. In 1944, Arjan Singh, as a squadron leader during World War II, fought with the Japanese in the Arakan movement. He also received the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his exemplary valor, skill and dedication to duty. After India gained independence on 15 August 1947, he also operated an IAF flight.

In 1949, after being promoted as Air Commando, Arjan Singh took over as the Commanding Air Force Chief of the Operational Command, leading to him becoming known as the Western Air Commander. On 1 August 1964, he took over as the Chief of the Air Force. When the war between India and Pakistan started in September 1965. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan and was also promoted to Marshal, the rank of his Air Force chief. He became the first Air Chief Marshal (Air Force Chief Marshal) of the Indian Air Force. In August 1969, upon retirement from the Air Force, he became the Rajput of India in Switzerland.


Responsibility


He was the Chief of the Air Force (CAS) from 1 August 1964 to 15 July 1969, and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1965. For his contribution to the Air Force in the 1965 war, he was elevated as Air Chief Marshal to the rank of Air Chief. He was the first Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force. He retired from his services in 1969 at the age of 50. In 1971 (after his retirement) he was appointed as the Indian Ambassador to Switzerland. He also served as ambassador to the concurrent Vatican.

Notable facts


1.     Marshal rank is equivalent to Field Marshal, which was only given to the officers of the army. K. M. Kariyappa and Sem Manekshaw were the two army generals who were made field marshals. Arjan Singh was the first officer in the Air Force and Non-Army to be given the rank of Marshal.
2.     When the country became independent on August 15, 1947, Arjan Singh was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the 100 Indian Air Force aircraft that passed over Delhi and the Red Fort.
3.     On August 1, 1964, at the age of 45, Arjan Singh became the Chief of the Indian Air Force and was the first Chief of the Air Force to fly aircraft despite being the Chief of Air Staff, and kept his flying category intact.
4.     Arjan Singh was not only a fearless pilot, but also had deep knowledge of the Air Force. In the 1965 war against Pakistan, Arjan Singh commanded the Indian Air Force and did not allow the Pakistani Air Force to win, while the Pakistani Air Force was better equipped due to US cooperation.


Death


Arjan Singh was admitted to the Army's Research and Referral Hospital on Saturday morning. He was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack.
